Description
Aeonium virus (Nepovirus aeonii) is a plant pathogen classified within the Nepovirus genus. This virus targets succulent plants, specifically those belonging to the Aeonium genus, causing systemic infection that disrupts the host's normal biological functions and leads to severe structural degradation over time.
The virus primarily affects species within the Crassulaceae family. Due to the high popularity of these plants in horticulture, Nepovirus aeonii poses a significant threat to private collectors and commercial growers, as it can persist in plants without showing immediate symptoms, facilitating its spread across different batches.
Clinical signs of infection typically manifest as chlorotic spotting, mosaic patterns on the foliage, and significant leaf deformation. In advanced stages, the plants exhibit stunted growth, weakened root systems, and overall loss of ornamental value, rendering them unsuitable for sale or propagation.
Transmission occurs mainly through mechanical means, such as the use of shared cutting tools, or via contact between infected and healthy tissues. While some nepoviruses are known to be transmitted by soil-dwelling nematodes, the primary vector in indoor succulent culture is typically human activity, including contaminated tools and poor quarantine practices during the acquisition of new stock.
There is no chemical cure for Nepovirus aeonii, making rigorous biosecurity the only effective management strategy. Prevention must be systematic to maintain a healthy collection:
- Strict isolation of all newly acquired plants for at least 30-60 days.
- Sterilization of pruning knives and shears after each plant using high-concentration alcohol.
- Immediate removal and disposal of infected plant material to prevent viral spread.
- Maintaining high standards of greenhouse sanitation to minimize vector populations.
