Description
Arracacha virus (Nepovirus arracaciae) is a systemic plant pathogen belonging to the genus Nepovirus. This virus disrupts normal physiological plant functions, leading to significant physiological decline and hindering the overall productivity of host plants.
Primary hosts for this pathogen include the arracacha plant (Arracacia xanthorrhiza), though infections have been identified in various potato species and other agricultural crops. The virus is primarily localized within the vascular system, facilitating its rapid movement throughout the plant tissue.
Symptoms of the disease are characterized by chlorotic spots, mosaic patterns, leaf deformation, and stunted growth. In severe cases, the infected crops exhibit reduced vigor, smaller tuber formation, and diminished quality of the harvest, causing economic distress for agricultural operations.
Transmission occurs through infected vegetative propagation material and, significantly, through soil-borne nematodes. Mechanical transmission also plays a role in the dissemination of the virus during routine field activities, such as cultivation, pruning, and harvesting, if tools are not properly cleaned.
