Description
The causative agent is the Grapevine ringspot virus, a member of the Nepovirus genus. This plant pathogen infects the vascular system of the host, leading to physiological disturbances that weaken the plant's ability to produce high-quality fruit. It is classified as a significant threat to commercial viticulture due to its systemic nature.
The primary host for this virus is the grapevine (Vitis species). While it thrives in the woody tissues of the vine, the virus can also persist in the soil environment within its nematode vectors. This makes the disease difficult to manage once it has become established within a specific vineyard site.
Symptoms are usually visible on foliage as yellow or chlorotic rings, patterns, or mottling. Infected vines often exhibit stunted growth, shortened internodes, and zigzag growth habits. Fruit set is typically poor, resulting in loose clusters with small, unevenly ripened berries that are commercially unviable.
Transmission occurs through soil-dwelling nematodes, particularly species of Xiphinema, which acquire the virus while feeding on infected roots. Additionally, the virus spreads through grafting and the distribution of infected nursery stock. Because the virus is systemic, it spreads throughout the vine, making it nearly impossible to cure an infected individual plant.
Prevention relies heavily on the use of virus-indexed, certified disease-free propagation material. Vineyard site preparation is crucial; this includes testing for the presence of nematode vectors and, if necessary, treating the soil or leaving the land fallow. Ongoing management involves scouting for symptoms, removing infected vines, and controlling weed populations that may act as alternative hosts for both the virus and the vectors.
