Description

The causal agent of this disease is Nepovirus cerasiferae, a virus within the Nepovirus genus. This plant pathogen systematically affects the host's vascular tissues, significantly impairing metabolic processes and hindering the proper translocation of assimilates. The virus is highly persistent within infected plant tissues, making it a chronic threat to long-term orchard productivity.

The primary hosts of this virus are members of the Prunus genus, most notably Prunus cerasifera (myrobalan plum). Other stone fruit varieties can also serve as hosts, often acting as latent carriers that facilitate the spread of the virus throughout the orchard without showing immediate, catastrophic symptoms.

Symptoms of Nepovirus cerasiferae infection are typically characterized by chlorotic spotting, mosaic patterns on the foliage, and significant leaf deformation. Infected trees often exhibit stunted growth, shortened internodes, and a reduction in fruit size and quality. In severe stages, necrotic lesions on the bark and premature leaf drop are commonly observed.

Transmission in the field is primarily mediated by soil-borne nematodes of the genera Xiphinema and Longidorus. These vectors acquire the virus while feeding on the roots of infected plants and subsequently transmit it to healthy ones. The disease incidence is often correlated with specific soil moisture conditions and the presence of reservoir weed species in the orchard floor.

Effective management focuses on prevention, as there is no curative treatment for infected trees. The primary strategies include using certified virus-free propagation material, implementing strict quarantine protocols, and controlling nematode populations through soil fumigation or integrated pest management. Infected trees should be removed promptly, including the root system, to halt further spread.
