The causative agent of the disease is the Nepovirus chromusivum, a member of the Nepovirus genus. This plant virus is primarily transmitted through soil-borne nematodes of the genera Xiphinema and Longidorus. Beyond nematode vectors, the pathogen can also spread via infected seeds and contaminated vegetative planting material, maintaining stability within plant tissues for extended durations.

The virus affects a variety of economically significant crops, including grapes, strawberries, and various berry shrubs. It colonizes the vascular system of the host, systemically spreading throughout the organism. The prevalence of this virus in long-lived perennial crops makes it a persistent challenge for commercial fruit production and nursery stock maintenance.

Symptoms of the infection typically manifest as chromatic or ring-spot patterns on the leaves, accompanied by chlorosis and localized tissue necrosis. Affected plants frequently exhibit stunted growth, leaf deformation, and reduced photosynthetic capacity. In susceptible varieties, the virus causes a significant decrease in yield and berry quality, often rendering the crop unmarketable due to morphological changes.
