Description
Cycas necrotic stunt virus (Nepovirus cycas) is a plant pathogenic virus belonging to the Nepovirus genus, which primarily impacts the health of ornamental cycad species. As a systemic infection, it interferes with essential plant functions, leading to significant physiological stress and reduced growth performance in affected specimens.
The primary hosts of this virus are members of the Cycas genus, particularly popular landscape plants such as Cycas revoluta. The infection is often persistent and challenging because the virus integrates into the plant's vascular system, causing long-term damage that may not be immediately obvious to the grower.
Symptoms of the disease typically manifest as chlorotic spotting, mosaic patterns on the leaves, and necrosis. As the virus progresses, leaf deformities become more pronounced, and the overall plant vigor declines. If left untreated, the plant may suffer from stunted growth, leaf drop, and may eventually become susceptible to secondary pathogens.
The virus is primarily transmitted through infected plant propagation materials and mechanical injuries caused by contaminated pruning equipment. Like other nepoviruses, it may also be spread by soil-borne nematodes, which transmit the virus between root systems in both nursery containers and landscape plantings.
There are no direct chemical treatments available to cure a plant once it is infected with a virus, emphasizing the importance of proactive management strategies:
- Procure only certified disease-free plants from reputable nurseries.
- Sterilize all pruning tools and equipment between handling different plants to prevent cross-contamination.
- Manage soil-borne nematode populations to eliminate potential virus vectors.
- Implement strict quarantine protocols for any new plants introduced into a greenhouse or garden collection.
