Description
Grapevine fanleaf virus (GFLV) is a widespread and devastating plant pathogen belonging to the Nepovirus genus. It is responsible for the infectious degeneration of grapevines, a condition that severely compromises the vitality and productive capacity of vineyards worldwide.
This virus specifically infects grape species (Vitis spp.). Once a vine is infected, the virus spreads systemically throughout the entire plant, including the vascular system and roots, ensuring that the plant remains a perennial reservoir of the infection for the duration of its life.
The disease is characterized by distinct morphological changes, most notably the fan-like deformation of the leaves, where the main veins become abnormally spread out. Shoots often exhibit zigzag growth patterns, shortened internodes, and double nodes. Furthermore, the berries show irregular ripening and significant cluster shelling, which drastically reduces harvest quality.
The primary vector for the transmission of GFLV is the soil-borne dagger nematode, Xiphinema index. These nematodes acquire the virus by feeding on the roots of infected plants and subsequently transmit it to healthy vines. In addition, long-distance spread is primarily facilitated by the trade and planting of infected vine cuttings or rootstocks.
Management of the disease relies strictly on preventative measures. Because no chemical cure exists for viral plant infections, growers must focus on using virus-free nursery stock, testing soil for the presence of Xiphinema nematodes prior to vineyard establishment, and implementing rigorous sanitation protocols for all pruning equipment to prevent mechanical transmission.
