Description
The causative agent of the disease is the Blueberry leaf mottle virus (BLMoV), which belongs to the Nepovirus genus. This virus acts as a systemic pathogen that disrupts the vascular transport system and impairs photosynthetic activity, leading to a progressive decline in plant vigor and overall fruit quality.
Highbush blueberry (Vaccinium corymbosum) serves as the primary host for this viral pathogen. While the virus shows high specificity to this species, it poses a significant threat to commercial blueberry plantations, potentially causing widespread economic losses if left unmanaged due to its ability to persist long-term within the plant tissues.
The most common symptoms include distinct mottling, chlorotic ring spots, and necrotic lines on the leaves. Infected plants often exhibit stunted growth, leaf deformation, and a reduced number of flower buds. In severe cases, the entire plant structure becomes distorted, and the berries fail to reach market size or maturity.
The virus is spread through infected nursery stock, which is the most common route of introduction into new fields. Secondary spread occurs through pollen transmission during the blooming season, as well as via mechanical transfer through contaminated pruning equipment. While some nepoviruses are vector-transmitted by soil nematodes, pollen and infected cuttings are primary concerns for growers.
