Description
Tomato black ring virus (TBRV) is a destructive plant pathogen belonging to the Nepovirus genus. This virus causes systemic infections, leading to metabolic disturbances and stunted development, which significantly impact the physiological productivity and economic value of the tomato crop.
The host range of TBRV is extensive, affecting not only Solanaceae like tomatoes, peppers, and eggplants but also various horticultural crops and common weeds. These weeds often serve as persistent reservoirs that facilitate the survival of the virus across different growing seasons.
Clinical signs typically manifest as chlorotic ring spots on the leaves, which eventually turn necrotic, resulting in characteristic black rings. Severe infections lead to leaf distortion, mottling, shortened internodes, and, in susceptible varieties, the eventual collapse of the plant's structural integrity.
Transmission occurs primarily through infected seeds, pollen, and soil-borne nematodes of the genera Xiphinema and Longidorus. The spread is most rapid in poorly managed soils where high moisture levels and nematode populations provide an ideal environment for virus acquisition and transmission to healthy root systems.
Management strategies focus on prevention, as there are no curative treatments for viral diseases. Key practices include the use of virus-free seed stocks, strict sanitation in greenhouses, and the management of nematode populations through soil steaming or crop rotation. Early identification and rogueing of infected plants are critical to minimizing the spread throughout the plantation.
