Olive latent ringspot virus

Olive latent ringspot virus (OLRSV), often associated with the Nepovirus oleae complex, is a significant plant pathogen that causes systemic infections in olive trees. As a member of the Nepovirus genus, this virus circulates within the host, disrupting metabolic activities and leading to long-term health decline in infected specimens.

The primary host for this virus is the European olive (Olea europaea). The infection can spread throughout various agricultural environments, from commercial orchards to nurseries, often remaining undetected for extended periods due to the latent nature of the pathogen in many cultivars.

Symptoms typically manifest on the foliage, appearing as chlorotic rings, wavy lines, or spotting patterns. In severe cases, growers may observe leaf deformation, reduced internode length, and stunted canopy growth. Because the virus often resides in the plant without immediate external signs, infected trees can serve as hidden reservoirs for further spread.

The virus is primarily transmitted through contaminated vegetative material used for grafting and propagation. Additionally, soil-borne nematodes act as vectors, facilitating the transmission of the virus between the roots of adjacent trees. Warm and moist soil conditions usually promote higher nematode activity, thereby increasing the rate of natural virus dispersal.

The economic impact of this disease is substantial, as it leads to reduced fruit quality, lower oil yields, and increased vulnerability to secondary pests and pathogens. Since there is no curative chemical treatment for viral infections in olive trees, preventive measures remain the only effective way to manage the disease.
