Cocoa nepovirus (Nepovirus theobromatis) is a viral plant disease caused by a member of the Nepovirus genus. This pathogen is known for its ability to cause systemic infections, affecting the vascular transport system of the host plant. The virus interferes with nutrient translocation and hormonal balance, leading to a significant decline in the physiological vigor of affected trees.

The primary host for this virus is the cacao tree (Theobroma cacao). The infection is often localized in the meristematic tissues and vascular bundles. While the virus shows high host specificity, its presence in plantation environments is often linked to the ecological complexity of the region, where native plants may serve as reservoir hosts for the pathogen.

Symptoms of the disease are diverse and can include chlorotic spotting, leaf mottling, and mosaic patterns on the foliage. Infected trees frequently exhibit stunted growth, shortened internodes, and an overall reduction in vegetative mass. The severity of these visual signs often correlates with the duration of the infection and the environmental conditions prevailing during the growth cycle.

Transmission of the virus is predominantly facilitated by soil-dwelling nematodes, which act as specific vectors for nepoviruses. Furthermore, the spread of the disease can occur through the use of infected grafting scions or contaminated pruning tools during routine maintenance. Environmental factors, such as high soil moisture and warm temperatures, create ideal conditions for the movement and feeding activities of nematode vectors.

Effective management strategies rely heavily on phytosanitary measures, as there are no direct chemical treatments to eliminate the virus once established in the plant. Primary prevention includes the use of certified virus-free seedlings and the removal of symptomatic plants to prevent inoculum buildup. Soil management practices aimed at reducing nematode populations, combined with quarantine measures for new planting material, remain the most viable options for controlling the spread of this pathogen.
