Clover nepovirus

Nepovirus trifolii is a plant pathogen causing viral disease in forage legumes. As a member of the Nepovirus genus, this virus is primarily recognized for its association with soil-borne nematodes, which act as efficient vectors for the virus. The infection is systemic, affecting the plant's vascular tissue and inducing significant physiological stress that hinders normal development.

The primary host for this virus is clover (Trifolium species), which is a crucial component of grasslands and fodder production. While clover is the main target, the virus can also persist in other leguminous plants that serve as reservoir hosts. The presence of the virus in perennial roots ensures a long-term source of infection within agricultural ecosystems, making it a persistent challenge for farmers.

Symptoms of the infection typically include mosaic patterns on the leaves, chlorotic spots or rings, and distinct leaf deformation. Infected plants often show stunted growth, reduced internode length, and weakened general vigor. These visible signs often appear in patches within the field, reflecting the distribution patterns of the nematode vectors in the soil.

The development of the disease is highly dependent on environmental conditions that favor nematode mobility and feeding. Moist soil environments are particularly conducive to the spread of the virus. Transmission occurs mainly through the feeding activities of Xiphinema nematodes, although vertical transmission through seeds and mechanical transmission during farm operations are also significant pathways of spread.

Economic damage caused by the virus includes reduced biomass yield, lower quality of forage, and significant decreases in seed production. Prevention strategies focus on:

• sourcing virus-free certified seeds;
• implementing crop rotations that break the nematode cycle;
• eradicating weeds that host the virus;
• monitoring fields for nematode populations;
• using resistant cultivars when available.
