Description
The causal agent of this disease is a virus belonging to the Nepovirus genus, which is a major concern in viticulture worldwide. This pathogen is characterized by its ability to cause severe systemic disorders in host plants, significantly impairing their physiological functions. As a soil-borne virus, it presents unique challenges for long-term vineyard management and crop sustainability.
The primary host for this virus is the grapevine (Vitis spp.). The virus colonizes the entire vascular system, moving from the roots into the aerial parts of the vine. By exploiting the plant's metabolic pathways, the virus induces chronic stress, which affects the longevity of the vineyard and leads to a gradual decline in the overall vigor of the infected plants.
Symptoms often appear as foliage malformations, including fan-leaf-like structures, yellow mosaic patterns, and asymmetric leaf growth. Infected vines typically exhibit stunted shoots, shortened internodes, and zigzag growth patterns. These vegetative abnormalities are frequently accompanied by poor fruit set and reduced berry size, significantly impacting the commercial quality of the harvest.
Transmission of the virus is primarily facilitated by soil-dwelling nematodes, particularly those of the Dorylaimida order, such as Xiphinema species. These nematodes acquire the virus while feeding on infected roots and transmit it to healthy vines. Environmental factors like high soil moisture and temperature support the population density of these vectors, thereby increasing the risk of rapid disease spread.
Due to the lack of curative treatments for infected plants, disease management focuses strictly on prevention and eradication. Growers should prioritize the use of certified virus-tested planting stock and perform pre-planting soil analysis to detect the presence of nematode vectors. Infected vines must be promptly removed to prevent further spread of the virus within the vineyard block.
