Description

Blueberry necrotic ring blotch virus (BNRBV) is a destructive plant pathogen belonging to the Nepovirus genus. It specifically targets plants of the Vaccinium genus, causing systemic infection that severely compromises the health and vitality of the crops, leading to significant economic losses in berry production.

The primary host for this virus is the cultivated highbush blueberry. The virus infects the vascular tissue, causing a systematic decline in vigor. Its presence in a field can lead to rapid spread if vectors are present, making it a major concern for growers who maintain perennial berry stands.

Symptoms are most visible on the foliage and include chlorotic rings, spots, and sometimes blotches that eventually turn necrotic as the leaf tissue dies. In severe cases, the infected plants show stunted growth, reduced canopy density, and a notable decrease in fruit production quality and quantity.

Transmission of the virus occurs via soil-dwelling nematodes, which act as vectors, moving the virus between root systems of adjacent plants. Additionally, the virus can be spread through human activity, specifically through contaminated pruning tools or the introduction of already infected nursery stock into clean fields.

Since there are no curative measures for virus-infected plants, disease management is focused on prevention and eradication.
