Nucleopolyhedrovirus (NPV) is a genus of viruses that infects insects, primarily belonging to the order Lepidoptera. In agricultural science, NPV is recognized not as a plant disease, but as a critical biological control agent used to suppress pest populations that threaten crop productivity and yield quality.

The pathogens belong to the Baculoviridae family. They operate by invading the insect's cells and hijacking their biological processes to produce millions of viral progeny. When applied as a bio-insecticide, the virus must be ingested by the target larvae, which subsequently die after systemic infection and the breakdown of their internal tissues into a viral-rich fluid.

High larval density accelerates the transmission, while UV radiation from sunlight rapidly degrades viral particles. Therefore, agricultural experts emphasize applying these bio-agents during late afternoons or under overcast conditions to ensure maximum viral stability and contact probability.

The key benefits of using NPVs in crop protection include high specificity, which ensures no harm to beneficial insects, birds, or humans, and the absence of chemical residues on crops. Effective management strategies involve:
