Description
Nucleorhabdovirus is a genus of plant-infecting viruses within the Rhabdoviridae family. Unlike its related genus Cytorhabdovirus, nucleorhabdoviruses are characterized by the fact that their replication and maturation processes occur primarily within the nucleus of the host plant cell.
These pathogens have a broad host range, affecting various economically significant crops such as potatoes, maize, and several cereal species. They cause systemic infections that spread throughout the entire plant, disrupting metabolic processes and physiological development from the early stages of growth.
Symptoms of nucleorhabdovirus infection typically include distinct leaf chlorosis, mosaic patterns, plant stunting, and the curling or twisting of leaves. In severe cases, the infected plants exhibit reduced vigor, poor root system development, and significant yield losses, as the virus interferes with essential nutrient transport.
The transmission of these viruses in agricultural ecosystems is almost exclusively mediated by insect vectors, primarily leafhoppers and aphids.
