Description

Basal stem rot (BSR) is a destructive fungal disease affecting oil palms (Elaeis guineensis), primarily caused by the pathogen Ganoderma boninense. This disease is the most significant threat to oil palm production in Southeast Asia, leading to massive annual losses in yield and palm mortality.

The causal agent is a soil-borne white-rot fungus that colonizes the palm roots and base. The infection typically initiates when healthy roots come into contact with colonized woody debris left in the soil from previous plantings, allowing the pathogen to penetrate the vascular system.

Key symptoms and signs of the infection include:

  • Development of shelf-like fungal fruiting bodies (basidiocarps) at the base of the stem.
  • Yellowing and desiccation of older fronds followed by the collapse of the leaf canopy.
  • Formation of a cluster of unopened spear leaves in the central crown.
  • Internal tissue decay leading to a significant weakening of the stem's structural integrity.

Environmental conditions such as high soil moisture and warm tropical temperatures significantly accelerate the spread and colonization rate of Ganoderma. The pathogen propagates primarily through root-to-root contact, which causes the disease to spread locally in a radiating pattern throughout the plantation.

Disease management remains difficult, as there is currently no cure for infected palms. Prevention strategies focus on rigorous field sanitation, including the removal and destruction of stumps and root systems before replanting. Additionally, the application of biological agents like Trichoderma species and the use of resistant genotypes are recommended to mitigate the impact of the disease.
