Description
Olive mosaic is a viral disease caused by the Olivavirus pathogen, which affects long-lived perennial woody plants. As a systemic infection, the virus spreads through the vascular system, impacting the plant's metabolic functions and overall physiology. Being a part of the Betaflexiviridae family, the virus remains stable within the host tissue, causing persistent, chronic infections that challenge commercial olive production.
The primary host for this pathogen is the European olive (Olea europaea). The infection is often systemic, meaning the virus colonizes the entire plant, affecting leaves, stems, and fruits. Over time, the cumulative stress of the viral infection leads to reduced photosynthetic capacity, stunted development, and a significant decrease in the quality and quantity of oil produced by the affected trees.
Symptoms are most visible on the foliage, manifesting as distinctive mosaic patterns of light green or yellow chlorotic spots. In more severe cases, leaves may become deformed, curled, or stunted. These visual signs are often accompanied by reduced twig elongation and an overall thinning of the canopy. While some trees may remain asymptomatic under optimal growing conditions, they still act as reservoirs for the virus, facilitating further spread within the orchard.
Transmission occurs primarily through the use of infected propagation material, such as cuttings, scions, or rootstocks. Because the virus is mechanically transmissible, common orchard practices like pruning, grafting, and harvesting pose a significant risk. If tools are not sanitized between operations, the virus can be effectively spread from symptomatic to healthy trees, creating clusters of infection that are difficult to manage.
Managing Olivavirus requires a proactive strategy focused on prevention and hygiene, as there are no direct chemical treatments to cure an infected tree. Effective control measures include:
- Sourcing and planting only virus-tested, certified disease-free nursery stock.
- Strict implementation of sanitation protocols for all pruning and grafting tools using appropriate disinfectants.
- Regular inspections of orchards to identify and remove symptomatic trees.
- Maintaining robust orchard hygiene to minimize mechanical transmission risks during seasonal labor activities.
