Freesia ophiovirus (Latin: Ophiovirus freesiae) is a viral plant pathogen belonging to the genus Ophiovirus. It primarily affects plants of the genus Freesia, causing chronic systemic infections that lead to a significant decline in the quality and marketability of the cut flowers.
The virus impacts the physiological processes of the host plant, severely disrupting normal development. While it is primarily associated with Freesia crops, the risk of transmission exists whenever infected plant tissues come into contact with healthy ones, making it a serious concern for commercial floriculture greenhouses and nurseries.
Visible symptoms often include chlorotic spots, mosaic patterns, and distinctive ring-spot markings on the leaves. Infected plants typically exhibit stunted growth, reduced vigor, and twisted or malformed flowering stems. As the infection progresses, the overall decorative appeal of the plant is compromised, making it unsuitable for commercial use.
The virus is mainly spread through vegetative propagation using infected corms, which serve as the primary reservoir for the pathogen. Additionally, mechanical transmission during cultivation practices, such as pruning or harvesting with shared, unsterilized tools, facilitates the spread of the virus within a crop batch. Environmental factors like high humidity can exacerbate the stress on plants, making them more susceptible to the symptoms of the virus.
Effective management relies heavily on preventative strategies since there are no chemical treatments to cure virus-infected plants. Key measures include:
- Utilizing certified virus-free planting material.
- Rigorous rogueing (removal and destruction) of all symptomatic plants.
- Disinfecting all pruning and handling tools between different plants.
