Lettuce Mirafiori virus

Ophiovirus mirafioriense is a viral pathogen classified within the genus Ophiovirus. This virus is responsible for infecting various lettuce cultivars and other Asteraceae species, impacting their physiological performance and overall vitality.

The primary crop affected by this virus is lettuce (Lactuca sativa). Infections often occur in soil-based production systems, leading to significant economic losses in the greenhouse vegetable sector due to stunted growth and reduced leaf quality.

Key symptoms include systemic mosaic patterns, chlorotic spotting, and leaf distortion. Infected plants often show significant growth inhibition compared to healthy specimens, leading to direct yield reduction and lack of uniformity in the field.

Transmission of the virus is mediated by the soil-borne chytrid fungus Olpidium brassicae. The virus particles are carried within the fungal zoospores, which infect plant roots and introduce the virus into the vascular system of the host plant.
