Blueberry ring spot virus, scientifically known as Ophiovirus vaccinii, is a significant viral pathogen affecting various blueberry species. As a member of the Ophiovirus genus, this virus impacts plant vascular systems, leading to systemic infection that severely compromises the health and vitality of the crops.

The primary host for this pathogen is the highbush blueberry. Once a plant is infected, the virus interferes with essential physiological processes, including photosynthesis and nutrient uptake. This systemic invasion results in long-term decline and significant yield losses for growers, making early identification critical for disease management.

Symptoms are primarily visible on the foliage and include chlorotic rings, wavy line patterns, and sometimes mottled discoloration. As the infection progresses, growers may notice stunted shoot development and malformed fruit, which often results in lower sugar content and poor berry quality, rendering the harvest commercially unviable.

The virus is mainly transmitted through the movement of infected plant material during propagation.
