Ortervirales is an order of viruses that includes various retro-transcribing pathogens significantly impacting global plant health. In agricultural practice, these viruses are recognized for their complex replication cycles involving reverse transcription, which allows them to establish persistent and systemic infections within host crops, often leading to reduced yields and declining plant vitality over several seasons.
The causative agents within this order belong to families such as Caulimoviridae. These viruses possess the unique ability to integrate their genetic material into the plant genome. This mechanism ensures that the virus persists throughout the lifecycle of the host plant, making these diseases particularly difficult to eradicate once they are established in a field or orchard.
A wide variety of crops are susceptible to Ortervirales, including major vegetables like cauliflower, various cereals, and ornamental plants. The transmission of these viruses is primarily facilitated by insect vectors, such as aphids, leafhoppers, and whiteflies, which acquire the virus while feeding on infected plant sap and transmit it to healthy plants, often within minutes.
