Description
Peanut necrosis is a viral disease caused by Orthotospovirus arachinecrosis. As a significant pathogen within the Orthotospovirus genus, it disrupts the vascular system of the host plant, severely impacting the physiological functions, growth, and seed production of leguminous crops.
The primary host for this virus is the cultivated peanut (Arachis hypogaea). Infections can occur during various growth stages, but early-season infection is particularly devastating, often leading to stunted growth, reduced pod filling, and significant yield losses in commercial peanut cultivation worldwide.
Diagnostic symptoms of the disease include chlorotic spots, mosaic patterns, and distinct necrotic rings on leaves. Severely affected plants show shortened internodes, bushy appearance, and necrosis of the stems. In many cases, the plants fail to produce viable pods, or the quality of the harvested nuts is severely compromised.
The virus is exclusively transmitted by thrips, which acquire the pathogen while feeding on infected plant sap. Once infected, the thrips act as long-term vectors, spreading the virus as they move between plants. Weather patterns that favor thrips reproduction, such as warm and dry conditions, significantly increase the disease pressure within the field.
Management of peanut necrosis requires an integrated pest management (IPM) approach. This includes planting resistant cultivars, implementing effective weed control strategies to eliminate alternate hosts, and utilizing appropriate insecticides to reduce the population of thrips vectors. Early detection and regular field scouting remain the most effective methods to prevent widespread outbreaks and mitigate crop damage.
