Calla yellow spot virus, taxonomically defined as Orthotospovirus callaflavi, is a significant viral pathogen affecting ornamental crops, particularly those in the Araceae family. This pathogen is known for its ability to cause systemic infection, which can severely compromise the aesthetic quality and overall health of cultivated Calla lilies.
The primary hosts of this virus are plants of the Zantedeschia genus. Symptomatology typically includes the development of chlorotic spots, mosaic patterns on the foliage, and occasional leaf distortion. In severe cases, necrotic lesions may appear, leading to stunted growth and a significant reduction in the commercial viability of the plant stock.
The virus is transmitted by insect vectors, primarily thrips such as Frankliniella occidentalis. The transmission process is persistent-propagative, meaning that the vector acquires the virus during its larval stage while feeding on an infected plant and remains infectious for the remainder of its lifespan, effectively spreading the pathogen throughout a greenhouse.
Environmental conditions play a crucial role in the dissemination of Orthotospovirus callaflavi. Greenhouse environments that maintain optimal temperature and humidity levels for plant growth also facilitate the rapid reproduction of thrips. High populations of these insects drastically increase the probability of widespread viral transmission within a short period.
