Description
The disease is caused by the virus Orthotospovirus citrullonecrosis, a member of the Tospoviridae family. As a systemic plant pathogen, it invades the vascular tissues, interfering with essential nutrient transport and disrupting the normal growth cycle of the host plants.
This virus primarily infects cucurbit crops, with watermelons being the most susceptible host. The infection can spread rapidly throughout a commercial field, particularly during warm and humid conditions which favor the development of the virus and its insect vectors.
Symptoms are distinct and often devastating: they include chlorotic spots, necrotic streaks, and severe leaf curling. On the fruit, the virus manifests as necrotic ringspots and depressed areas, which render the harvest completely unmarketable and susceptible to secondary fungal or bacterial infections.
The transmission of this pathogen occurs mainly through thrips. Once the insect feeds on an infected plant, it acquires the virus and can transmit it to healthy hosts for the rest of its lifespan. Because the virus circulates within the vector, controlling the insect population is vital for managing the disease.
Control strategies should focus on integrated pest management (IPM). This includes the removal of weeds that serve as alternative hosts, the use of virus-free planting material, and the timely application of insecticides to reduce thrips populations. Practicing field hygiene and spatial isolation are also critical components for successful prevention.
