The disease is caused by Orthotospovirus cucurbichlorosis, a viral pathogen within the Tospoviridae family. As a systemic plant virus, it interferes with the physiological processes of the host, leading to stunted growth and reduced metabolic efficiency. Once the virus enters the plant cells, it replicates and spreads through the phloem to all parts of the plant.

The virus primarily affects members of the Cucurbitaceae family, such as cucumbers, melons, squash, and pumpkins. These plants serve as the main targets for infection, though several weed species in close proximity can harbor the virus, acting as a reservoir during the off-season.
