Orthotospovirus meloflavi is a plant pathogenic virus classified within the Orthotospovirus genus. This virus is known to cause significant physiological disruptions in plants, leading to severe economic losses in vegetable production, particularly within the Cucurbitaceae family, where it targets the host's vascular system.
The primary host for this pathogen is melon (Cucumis melo), although the virus exhibits a host range that can include various weed species. These weeds act as vital reservoirs for the virus, allowing it to survive during periods when the primary crop is not in the field, thus maintaining the infection cycle.
Symptoms are characterized by distinctive chlorotic spots, vein yellowing, and mosaic patterns on the foliage. Infected plants typically show stunted growth, reduced internode length, and malformed leaves. These symptoms directly inhibit photosynthesis and plant vigor, ultimately resulting in poor fruit development and reduced yield.
