Description
Orthotospovirus tomatoflavi is a plant viral pathogen causing severe symptoms in several economically important crops. As a member of the Orthotospovirus genus, this virus is notorious for its ability to devastate plant metabolism, leading to significant yield losses in both greenhouse and field-grown vegetables.
The primary transmission vector for this virus is the thrips population, especially Frankliniella occidentalis. The insects acquire the virus during their larval feeding stages on infected host plants and remain carriers throughout their adult lifespan. This persistent transmission mode makes managing the population of the vector essential to suppressing the viral spread.
Symptoms of infection include chlorotic spots, mosaic patterns on leaves, stunted growth, and necrotic streaks on stems. In tomato crops, the fruit often exhibits patchy yellowing and ring spots, which render the harvest non-marketable.
