Tomato necrotic spot virus (Orthotospovirus tomatomaculae) is a significant viral pathogen causing necrotic lesions on various agricultural crops. As a member of the Orthotospovirus genus, this virus disrupts the plant's physiological processes, leading to reduced vigour and economic losses in vegetable production.

The virus has a broad host range, primarily affecting Solanaceae family members such as tomatoes, peppers, and various weeds. These alternative hosts serve as a reservoir, allowing the virus to persist in the field even during the off-season, which complicates long-term management strategies.

Clinical signs of infection include chlorotic or necrotic spots, ring patterns on foliage, and distortion of the apical leaves. The most distinct symptoms are often observed on the fruits, where necrotic rings or surface mottling significantly degrade marketability and consumer appeal, leading to severe financial consequences.
