The pear leaf blister mite (Eriophyes pyri), often affecting pear buds and foliage, is a microscopic pest that causes significant physiological stress to fruit trees. While not a disease in the biological sense, its damage mimics various pathogens, leading to stunted growth and reduced fruit quality in pear orchards globally.
The pathogen, or rather the pest, overwinters under the scales of dormant buds. As the temperature rises in early spring, the mites emerge and colonize the developing leaves and blossoms. They feed by puncturing the plant cells, which triggers the formation of characteristic leaf blisters or galls.
Visual symptoms appear as small, light-colored spots on the leaves, which later enlarge and turn red, brown, or black as the tissue necroses. If the infestation is severe during the bud break stage, the buds themselves may become distorted, fail to open, or drop off prematurely, causing substantial yield loss.
Environmental conditions such as mild, humid springs provide the perfect climate for rapid mite reproduction. The lack of proper airflow within the tree canopy, often caused by inadequate pruning, further encourages the spread of the population, allowing the mites to migrate to adjacent, healthy branches.
Effective control strategies involve the application of specialized acaricides during the green tip stage to target the mites before they become protected within the galls. Regular orchard sanitation, including the careful removal and destruction of heavily infested twigs, is essential to minimize the pest's impact over time.
