Description
The causal agent of this disease is Pelamoviroid malleusmali, a specific viroid that infects pomaceous fruit trees. Unlike viruses, this viroid is a small, naked, circular single-stranded RNA molecule, which allows it to persist in host tissues with high stability and replicate efficiently using host enzymes.
The primary host for this pathogen is the apple tree (Malus domestica). Once infected, the plant becomes a permanent reservoir for the viroid. The pathogen spreads systemically throughout the vascular system, infiltrating roots, shoots, and fruit tissues, which causes chronic disease symptoms.
Symptoms of the infection usually manifest as chlorotic mottling, leaf spotting, or mosaic patterns on the foliage. Infected trees often exhibit stunted growth, reduced vigor, and poor fruit quality. In severe cases, the photosynthetic capacity of the tree is significantly impaired, leading to yield loss over time.
Transmission of the viroid occurs primarily through infected propagation material, such as scions and rootstocks used in grafting. It can also be transmitted mechanically via contaminated pruning tools. Because there are no known chemical treatments to "cure" an infected tree, prevention is the only viable strategy.
- Use only certified virus-free rootstock and scion wood for grafting.
