Description

Pathogen and disease type. The Pelargonium ring pattern virus is caused by Pelarspovirus anulopelargonii. It is a systemic viral infection that affects the plant's metabolic functions, leading to cellular damage and structural impairment. As an obligate parasite, it relies on host tissue for replication, making it a persistent internal threat to the plant's health.

Host range. This virus primarily affects various species and hybrids of the genus Pelargonium. While commercial greenhouse production of geraniums is most significantly impacted, other ornamental species in close proximity may occasionally harbor the virus, acting as symptomless reservoirs if not properly monitored.

Symptoms and signs. The most recognizable symptom is the development of concentric chlorotic rings, spots, or net-like patterns on the foliage. These spots may vary from yellow to pale green depending on the cultivar. In severe cases, systemic infection results in stunted growth, leaf curling, and an overall decrease in flower production and vigor.

Conditions for development and spread. The virus is predominantly transmitted through the propagation of infected cuttings, as it is a systemic pathogen. Additionally, physical contact via contaminated pruning shears and tools is a major factor in horizontal transmission within greenhouses. While some insect vectors are suspected in the transmission of related viruses, the primary driver in ornamental horticulture remains human-mediated spread through vegetative propagation.

Control and prevention measures. Since there are no curative chemical treatments for viral infections in plants, management focuses on strict sanitation. Essential measures include:

  • Sourcing only certified virus-free starting material.
  • Implementing rigorous hygiene protocols, including the sterilization of tools with appropriate disinfectants (e.g., alcohol or bleach) between plants.
  • Prompt removal and destruction of symptomatic plants to prevent potential spread by contact.
  • Regular monitoring and isolation of any newly introduced plants.
