Pelargonium line pattern virus

Pelargonium line pattern virus, caused by Pelarspovirus lineapelargonii, is a significant viral pathogen affecting various species of the Pelargonium genus. As a member of the Pelarspovirus genus, this virus interferes with the physiological processes of the plant, often leading to severe stunting and aesthetic degradation. It is a persistent threat to commercial greenhouse operations and ornamental plant collections.

The primary hosts of this virus are members of the Geraniaceae family, specifically zonal and regal pelargoniums. Once infected, a plant remains a permanent host throughout its lifespan. The virus colonizes the host's vascular system, ensuring its transmission to all newly formed tissues, including flowers and buds, which significantly reduces the commercial value of the crop.

Symptoms are visually distinct and often manifest as chlorotic lines, ringspots, and vein banding on the leaves. Infected plants may display stunted growth, shorter internodes, and sometimes mottled or deformed foliage. While symptoms may fluctuate depending on the growing temperature, the viral load within the plant remains high enough to ensure successful transmission.

The transmission of Pelarspovirus lineapelargonii is predominantly mechanical. It is spread through the use of contaminated pruning tools, handling of plants during maintenance, and the propagation of infected cuttings. Unlike some other plant viruses, the role of insect vectors is considered secondary compared to human-mediated spread during standard horticultural practices.

Since there is no chemical cure for systemic viral infections in plants, management must focus on strict sanitation. Implementing a rigorous program of tool sterilization, sourcing certified virus-free cuttings, and maintaining high hygiene standards is essential. Immediate roguing of symptomatic plants is critical to prevent the virus from spreading throughout the greenhouse population.
