Elderberry ring spot virus (Pelarspovirus sambuci) is a viral pathogen that affects members of the Sambucus genus. Classified within the Pelarspovirus genus, this virus is a significant concern for both ornamental gardening and commercial elderberry cultivation, as it can reduce plant vigor and lead to decline in productivity.
The virus primarily targets various elderberry species, including Sambucus nigra. While it can be found in wild populations, it is especially problematic in cultivated nurseries where clonal propagation is used. The pathogen systemically infects the host, moving through the vascular tissues to reach all parts of the plant, including leaves, stems, and fruits.
Symptoms of the disease are most visible on the leaves and include chlorotic rings, spots, and wavy line patterns. Affected foliage may become deformed or curled, and the overall plant growth might appear stunted. These symptoms can vary depending on the plant cultivar, environmental conditions, and the time of year, often being more pronounced during the spring growing season.
The spread of the virus occurs primarily through human activity, specifically the distribution of infected propagation material such as cuttings or grafts. While natural transmission via insect vectors like aphids or nematodes is possible, the anthropogenic factor remains the leading cause of regional and international outbreaks. Environmental stress can also make plants more susceptible to symptoms becoming severe.
Management of this disease focuses on strict sanitary practices because there is no direct chemical cure for viral infections in plants. Key strategies include:

- implementing rigorous hygiene protocols for pruning tools;
- monitoring and controlling potential insect vectors;
