The Peribunyaviridae family consists of viruses with segmented, negative-sense, single-stranded RNA genomes. In agricultural practice, these pathogens are recognized for their ability to induce systemic infections in high-value horticultural and field crops. The biological nature of these viruses allows them to efficiently hijack the host's cellular machinery, leading to stunted growth and impaired photosynthetic processes.
Typical hosts for these viral agents include a wide array of vegetables such as tomatoes, peppers, and various legume species. Many wild herbaceous plants also act as silent hosts, facilitating the survival of the virus throughout the year. Transmission is predominantly vectored by sucking insects, most notably thrips, which acquire the virus during feeding and transmit it to healthy tissue during subsequent feeding events.
Common symptoms indicative of a Peribunyaviridae infection include chlorotic mosaic patterns, leaf distortion, and stunted internodes. Infected plants often display reduced flower production and severe fruit abnormalities, which render the produce unmarketable. In severe cases, systemic necrosis may lead to the sudden collapse of the plant, especially under environmental stress.

Strategies must include rigid control of thrip populations through rotational insecticidal applications and biological control agents. Prevention is bolstered by maintaining strict sanitation, ensuring weed control around field edges, using reflective mulches to deter vectors, and prioritizing the planting of resistant crop varieties.
