The causative agent of this disease is the Petuvirus venapetuniae, a plant virus belonging to the Petuvirus genus. It is a systemic pathogen that primarily affects decorative plants within the Solanaceae family. As a viral disease, it interferes with vital physiological processes, leading to stunted growth and reduced vigor in infected specimens.

The primary host plant is the garden petunia (Petunia hybrida). The virus is highly contagious within greenhouse environments and nurseries where plants are grown in close proximity. Once introduced into a plant population, the virus persists in the sap and tissues, making long-term management critical for growers.

Symptoms typically manifest as chlorosis or vein clearing in the leaves, which eventually develops into a distinct mosaic pattern. Infected plants often show signs of leaf curling, reduction in overall leaf size, and color breaking in the petals. These visual symptoms significantly diminish the plant's aesthetic appeal, which is its main commercial value.

The development and spread of the virus are facilitated by insect vectors, primarily aphids and some thrips species, which transmit the virus while feeding on plant sap. Furthermore, mechanical transmission is a major concern; contaminated pruning shears, knives, or even hands used during propagation can quickly spread the pathogen throughout a crop.

The harmfulness of the disease lies in the total loss of ornamental value, rendering the plants unsellable. Prevention is the only reliable management strategy, as there is no cure for established viral infections. This includes strictly sourcing clean propagation material, implementing intensive pest control programs, and disinfecting all tools with appropriate virucidal solutions between every single plant.
