Description
Phyllosticta leaf blight, caused by the fungus Depazea batatas, is a common foliar disease affecting sweet potato crops globally. This pathogen specifically targets the leaves, leading to aesthetic and physiological damage that reduces the overall health and yield potential of the plant.
The primary host for this fungus is sweet potato (Ipomoea batatas). The disease is often observed in fields where environmental conditions favor fungal growth, particularly during periods of high humidity or excessive overhead irrigation that keeps the canopy wet for prolonged periods.
Symptoms typically begin as small, circular, or irregular brown to tan lesions on the leaf surface. As the infection progresses, these spots develop diagnostic black, pinhead-sized fungal fruiting bodies known as pycnidia. If left unchecked, the lesions can enlarge and merge, causing premature yellowing and leaf senescence.
The spread of the disease is heavily influenced by climate. Warm temperatures coupled with frequent rainfall or heavy dew facilitate the dispersal of spores from the pycnidia to healthy tissue via splashing water or wind. Poor field management, such as overcrowding or weed infestation, significantly increases the local humidity and promotes rapid epidemic development.
Economic losses occur due to the reduced ability of the plant to photosynthesize, resulting in undersized tubers and lower starch accumulation. To minimize the impact, growers should implement an integrated pest management program, which includes:
- Cleaning field debris after harvest to reduce inoculum sources.
- Using pathogen-free planting material.
- Applying fungicides specifically labeled for leaf spots.
- Ensuring proper spacing to improve air circulation within the crop canopy.
