Description
Physalis mosaic virus is a significant viral pathogen that poses a serious threat to various crops within the Solanaceae family. As an obligate parasite, the virus relies entirely on the host plant's internal cellular machinery to replicate and spread throughout the vascular system.
The host range is broad, prominently including Physalis species, tomatoes, peppers, and various wild nightshade weeds. These wild hosts often serve as reservoirs, allowing the virus to persist in the environment even when primary crops are not present on the site.
Characteristic signs of infection are manifest in the foliage, appearing as distinct mosaic patterns, chlorotic spots, and mottling. In advanced stages of the disease, the leaves may show severe distortion, curling, or reduction in size, which drastically limits the plant's photosynthetic capacity and fruit yield.
The virus is primarily transmitted through mechanical contact with infected sap, contaminated tools, or by vector insects such as aphids that pierce and suck plant tissues.
