The virus acts as an intracellular parasite of the fungus-like pathogen rather than the plant itself.

The causative agent of this state is the virus itself, which consists of a double-stranded RNA genome. It resides within the cytoplasm of the oomycete cells. The virus typically establishes a persistent infection, meaning it does not immediately kill the pathogen but alters its metabolic and reproductive capabilities over time.
