Phytoreovirus is a genus of plant viruses within the Reoviridae family characterized by a double-stranded RNA genome. These pathogens are known for causing severe systemic diseases in various agricultural crops, with a notable impact on global food security due to their ability to severely stunt plant growth.

The primary hosts for these viruses include rice and several other monocotyledonous species. The most economically significant member of this genus is the Rice dwarf virus (RDV), which has been a major constraint for rice production systems in various regions, leading to substantial yield losses annually.

Plants infected with Phytoreovirus typically display clear symptoms such as stunted growth, mosaic patterns, chlorosis, and general deformation of leaves. In severe cases, the infected plants fail to produce reproductive organs or yield significantly underdeveloped grains, which directly affects the economic viability of the agricultural operation.

Transmission occurs exclusively through insect vectors, specifically leafhoppers. The virus establishes a persistent infection within the insect host, meaning the vector remains infectious for its entire lifespan. Environmental factors that promote the breeding and migration of these insects are the primary drivers of localized viral outbreaks in fields.

Control strategies are essential to mitigate the spread of these viruses in commercial farming:
