Description
The causative agent of the disease is the Rice dwarf virus (Phytoreovirus betaoryzae), a member of the Phytoreovirus genus. This virus targets the plant's vascular system, causing systemic infection that disrupts the normal development of the host plant at the cellular level.
The primary host for this pathogen is rice (Oryza sativa). While it is specifically associated with rice, it can significantly impact agricultural productivity in regions where the virus vector population is high and climatic conditions favor the cycle of transmission.
Symptoms of the infection typically include stunted growth, which gives the plant a dwarf appearance. Other visible signs are characterized by chlorosis (yellowing), increased tillering, and distorted leaf blades. These symptoms often lead to a drastic reduction in grain yield and quality.
The virus is primarily transmitted by leafhoppers, such as Nephotettix cincticeps. The insect remains a carrier for the duration of its life, facilitating the spread of the virus throughout the field during the growing season by feeding on healthy plants after accessing infected ones.
Management strategies focus on the integrated pest management (IPM) approach to suppress the leafhopper population. This includes the use of resistant rice cultivars, proper field sanitation to eliminate weeds that may serve as virus reservoirs, and timely insecticide applications to prevent outbreaks.
