Picornaviruses (Picornaviridae) constitute a diverse family of positive-sense single-stranded RNA viruses. While primarily associated with animal pathogens, they also include important plant-infecting viruses that disrupt physiological processes, causing systemic infections and substantial economic losses in various agricultural sectors.

These viruses affect a wide range of host plants, including cereal grains, legumes, and vegetable crops. The virus particle utilizes the plant's replication machinery to propagate, spreading systemically through the phloem and causing widespread damage to the vascular system of the crop during its peak growing phase.

Symptoms of infection are highly variable but typically include mosaic patterns on leaves, stunted growth, leaf curling, and chlorosis. Infected plants often exhibit reduced vigor and distorted morphology, which leads to a significant decrease in both the quality and quantity of the final harvestable yield.

Transmission of these pathogens is largely mediated by insect vectors, such as aphids, whiteflies, and leafhoppers, which transmit the virus while feeding. Additionally, mechanical transmission during field operations and contact between plants in dense stands can facilitate rapid spread. Environmental factors like high temperature and humidity promote both vector activity and viral replication.

Protection strategies are primarily focused on preventative measures since there are no chemical cures for established viral infections:

  • Utilizing virus-free, certified seeds and resistant plant cultivars.
  • Implementing integrated pest management (IPM) to control insect vectors effectively.
  • Establishing buffer zones and eradicating reservoir weed hosts around fields.
  • Applying strict hygiene protocols during cultivation and harvesting to avoid mechanical spread.
