Description
Pathogen and disease type: Wheat streak mosaic is a viral disease caused by the Wheat streak mosaic virus (WSMV), a member of the genus Poacevirus within the family Potyviridae. It is a highly destructive pathogen that causes systemic infection in susceptible grass species, leading to significant physiological stress in cereal crops.
Host crops: The primary commercial host is wheat (both winter and spring varieties). However, the virus has a broad host range that includes barley, corn, millet, and various wild grasses. These wild hosts, particularly volunteer wheat and perennial grasses like couch grass, act as critical reservoirs for the virus and its vector.
Symptoms and signs: The characteristic symptoms manifest as light-green or yellow streaking and mottling on the leaf blades, running parallel to the veins. As the disease progresses, infected plants exhibit stunted growth, excessive tillering, and chlorosis. In severe cases, the grain heads are either poorly developed or fail to produce kernels entirely.
Conditions for development: The virus is exclusively transmitted by the wheat curl mite, Aceria tosichella. These mites acquire the virus by feeding on infected tissue and transmit it to healthy plants. Transmission is most prevalent during warm, dry weather, when mite populations migrate from maturing crops or volunteer wheat to newly emerged seedlings.
Damage and mitigation: The disease causes severe yield losses by reducing grain weight and quality, often resulting in complete crop failure in localized areas. Since there are no curative chemical treatments for viral infections in field crops, control measures are strictly preventative:
- Eliminating volunteer wheat and grassy weeds before planting new crops.
- Delaying the planting date for winter wheat to avoid the peak mite migration window.
- Planting resistant or tolerant wheat varieties.
- Ensuring spatial separation between newly planted fields and mature, infested cereal fields.
