Polemovirus

Polemovirus is a genus of plant viruses within the Tombusviridae family. As a viral pathogen, it utilizes plant cells to replicate its single-stranded RNA genome, leading to systemic infection. It is recognized in phytopathology as a significant factor affecting the health and physiological integrity of various vegetation types.

The virus affects a diverse range of agricultural crops, with particular susceptibility observed in Solanaceae and Cucurbitaceae species. The infection can spread throughout the plant vascular system, interfering with nutrient transport and leading to metabolic imbalances that stunt the plant's growth and productivity.

Typical symptoms of Polemovirus include mosaic patterns on leaves, chlorosis (yellowing), leaf curling, and severe distortion of fruit structure. In many instances, infected plants show signs of stunted overall growth compared to healthy ones, which serves as a clear indicator for field scouting.

Environmental transmission of the virus is often facilitated by mechanical contact, contaminated agricultural tools, and various insect vectors. Soil moisture and the presence of reservoir weeds can also contribute to the virus's persistence in the field, making the maintenance of a clean growing environment critical.

Control and prevention strategies rely primarily on integrated pest management (IPM) practices. Key efforts should focus on using virus-free seeds, implementing strict sanitation protocols for equipment, and managing vector populations effectively.
