Description

The Polerovirus genus represents a group of plant viruses that pose a significant threat to global agriculture. These viruses are characterized by their phloem-restricted nature, meaning they localize within the plant's vascular tissue, effectively blocking the transport of essential nutrients and sugars.

The host range of Poleroviruses is quite broad, including vital crops such as potatoes, sugar beets, cereals, and various legumes. The most well-known member of this genus is the Potato leafroll virus (PLRV), which is responsible for substantial yield losses worldwide, often causing a drastic reduction in tuber quality and quantity.

Symptoms of a Polerovirus infection usually appear as leaf curling, rolling, yellowing (chlorosis), and stunted growth. In severe cases, the affected plants show significant reduction in biomass, and the accumulation of starch in the leaves makes them brittle and thick, which is a classic diagnostic marker for many species.

Transmission occurs exclusively through aphid vectors in a persistent-circulative manner. The aphid acquires the virus by feeding on infected plants and retains it for a prolonged period, transmitting the pathogen to healthy hosts during subsequent feeding cycles. This transmission method makes the virus very difficult to contain once established.

Management strategies for Poleroviruses are centered on integrated pest management (IPM). Key practices include the use of virus-free seeds, precise control of aphid populations using systemic insecticides, and the implementation of cultural practices like proper crop rotation and the elimination of weeds that may serve as alternate hosts.
