Description
Beet chlorosis virus (BChV) is a plant virus belonging to the genus Polerovirus and family Solemoviridae. It is a significant pathogen affecting sugar beet and related species globally. Unlike some other viruses, it is transmitted in a persistent, circulative manner by aphid vectors and cannot be transmitted through mechanical sap inoculation or seed.
The primary host range includes members of the Amaranthaceae family. Sugar beet (Beta vulgaris) is the most commercially impacted crop. Weed species in the field margins often act as asymptomatic reservoirs, ensuring the survival of the virus during periods when sugar beet crops are not present in the fields.
Symptoms typically involve interveinal chlorosis, which initially appears on older leaves and spreads inward. Unlike the Beet yellows virus (BYV), the leaves affected by BChV usually retain their original texture and do not become brittle or thickened. The severity of the symptoms is often influenced by the time of infection and the environmental conditions affecting the plant's physiological state.
The primary vector for BChV is the green peach aphid (Myzus persicae). Once an aphid acquires the virus by feeding on an infected plant, it remains viruliferous for the rest of its life, though it does not pass the virus to its offspring. The spread of the disease is highly dependent on aphid population dynamics, which are in turn driven by temperature and moisture levels throughout the growing season.
The impact of BChV on agricultural production is substantial, resulting in reduced root weight and lower sugar content. Effective management requires an integrated pest management (IPM) approach:
- Monitoring and controlling aphid populations with insecticides.
- Removing weed reservoirs that harbor the virus.
- Implementing crop rotation and maintaining spatial isolation from previous seasons' fields.
- Using certified clean seed to prevent early-season infection risks.
