Beet mild yellowing virus (BMYV), a member of the genus Polerovirus, is a significant plant pathogen that primarily affects the productivity of beet crops. Unlike some other viruses, BMYV is restricted to the plant's phloem tissue, which defines its specific transmission characteristics and the physiological symptoms observed in the field.
The host range is centered on the genus Beta, including sugar beet, fodder beet, and red beet. However, the virus also infects a wide range of wild plant species, particularly from the Amaranthaceae family. These wild hosts act as a critical reservoir, allowing the virus to persist in the landscape between growing seasons.
The primary symptom is an interveinal yellowing of the older leaves, which often progresses to a bright golden or orange hue.
