Description
Carrot leafy dwarf virus (CLDV), classified within the Polerovirus genus, is a destructive plant pathogen that primarily affects carrot crops. This virus induces systemic infection, leading to significant physiological stress in the host plant and resulting in poor crop development and substantial yield losses.
The primary host range for CLDV includes cultivated carrots (Daucus carota), but it is also known to infect other members of the Apiaceae family, such as parsley and parsnip. The virus relies on these plants to survive through seasons, acting as a reservoir in both wild and cultivated populations.
Symptoms of the disease are characterized by stunted plant growth, leaf curling, and chlorosis or reddish discoloration of the foliage. Infected carrots often display a distinct bushy appearance due to the proliferation of small, distorted leaves. These symptoms directly hinder the photosynthetic capacity of the plant and suppress root development.
The virus is transmitted by the carrot psyllid (Trioza apicalis) in a persistent, circulative manner. Once the insect acquires the virus after feeding on an infected plant, it remains infectious for the remainder of its life. The incidence of the disease is highly correlated with the migration patterns and population density of the psyllid vector.
Management of the virus focuses on breaking the transmission cycle between the vector and the host crop. This includes strict weed control to eliminate virus reservoirs, the application of targeted insecticides to manage psyllid populations, and the use of physical barriers like mesh covers. Early detection and monitoring of vector populations are crucial to minimizing the impact of this viral disease.
