Description

Polerovirus is a significant genus of plant viruses within the family Solemoviridae, responsible for causing severe systemic diseases in a wide range of economically important crops. These viruses are restricted to the phloem tissue of their hosts, causing significant disruption to the plant's metabolic and transport processes.

Key host plants include potatoes, sugar beets, cereal crops, and various vegetables. The virus significantly impairs the movement of photosynthates from the leaves to the rest of the plant, which leads to stunted growth, reduced yields, and poor development of tubers, roots, or fruits, making it a major concern for modern agriculture.

Symptoms are often diagnostic, including leaf curling, chlorosis (yellowing), or reddening of the foliage. In many cases, the lower leaves become leathery and brittle, curling upward or inward, which significantly reduces the photosynthetic efficiency of the plant canopy. Early detection is often difficult, as symptoms may be confused with nutrient deficiencies.

The transmission mechanism of Polerovirus is strictly vector-borne, primarily by aphids. The virus is acquired by the aphid during feeding on the phloem of an infected plant and is transmitted to healthy plants in a persistent manner. The efficiency of transmission makes aphids the most critical factor in the epidemiology of these viral diseases.

Integrated pest management (IPM) is essential for controlling Polerovirus outbreaks:

  • Rigorous control of aphid populations using systemic insecticides.
  • Use of certified virus-free seed stock for planting.
  • Implementation of field sanitation by removing reservoir weeds.
  • Spatial isolation of crops from known sources of infection.
  • Selection of resistant or tolerant cultivars to minimize viral impact.
