Barley yellow dwarf is caused by the Polerovirus cydvrpv, a globally distributed virus that infects a wide variety of cereal crops and grasses. The virus is phloem-limited and is transmitted in a persistent, circulative, and non-propagative manner by various species of aphids. It remains a significant threat to cereal production by severely impacting yields and grain quality.

Common hosts for this virus include barley, wheat, oats, and rye, along with many wild grasses that act as reservoirs. These host plants allow the virus to persist in the environment, serving as the primary source of inoculum for new seasonal outbreaks. Aphids acquire the virus by feeding on infected plant phloem and transmit it to healthy plants.

Symptoms of the disease are characterized by stunting, reduced tillering, and discoloration of the leaves.
